Cost of a dental implant: what affects it
There is no single price: it depends on your situation. After the consultation, you receive a written estimate that sets out each step, before any treatment.
Why there is no single price
The word “implant” refers to the artificial root, but complete treatment involves much more: the examination, imaging, sometimes an extraction or a graft, the placement, healing, the final tooth and the check-ups. Two people missing a tooth in the same place may have very different needs.
That is why the practice does not give a figure before the examination. A price quoted without seeing your mouth could not take into account what really makes treatment vary.
What affects the cost
- The number of implants and of teeth to replace.
- Any preparation: an extraction, a bone graft.
- The imaging needed for the treatment plan.
- The type of crown, bridge or denture fitted on the implant.
- A temporary tooth during healing, if one is planned.
- The number of sessions and check-ups.
From the first appointment to the estimate
- Consultation. You explain your request; the dentist examines your mouth and reviews your general health.
- Imaging. An X-ray, and possibly 3D imaging, makes it possible to assess the bone and to plan any preparation that may be needed.
- Treatment plan. The steps, their order and the expected schedule are set according to your case.
- Written estimate. Each step is costed on the document you are given. You read it and ask your questions before deciding.
What the estimate contains
Each step and its cost, what is included and what is not, and the planned schedule. You can take the time to read it and ask your questions before you decide.
Questions to ask when reading an estimate
To compare proposals, check that they describe the same treatment:
- Is the crown or denture fitted on the implant included?
- Are a graft, an extraction or a temporary tooth planned?
- Are the imaging and the healing check-ups included?
- What is the planned schedule, and how many sessions should you expect?
- What happens if the plan needs to change during treatment?
Payment
The payment arrangements are explained to you before treatment begins. Any change to the plan along the way is presented to you, with its consequences, before it is carried out.
Reimbursement
Cover depends on your insurer (CNSS, CNOPS, mutual insurance) and your policy. Please check with them; the practice gives you the documents you need.
Frequently asked questions about cost
Can you give me a price by message?
Not reliably: without an examination and imaging, it is impossible to know whether preparation is needed or which prosthesis is suitable. The written estimate is drawn up after the consultation.
Can the estimate change during treatment?
It is drawn up for the planned treatment. If something unexpected means it has to change, the dentist explains why and presents the new proposal before going ahead.
Does an implant cost more than a bridge?
It depends on the number of teeth and the preparation needed. The dentist can present several options, each with its own estimate, so that you can compare with full information.
A clinical consultation is needed to determine whether this treatment is right for you.
