When should a removable denture be considered?

A removable denture replaces several teeth or a whole arch and comes out for cleaning. It can be partial or complete, and is sometimes stabilised by implants.

Crowns, bridges and dentures

A partial removable denture replaces several missing teeth by resting on the remaining teeth and on the gum, often with the help of clasps. A complete denture replaces all the teeth in an arch and rests on the gum and the bone.

It may be proposed when several teeth are missing in different places, when the remaining teeth cannot support a bridge, or as a temporary solution while waiting for implant treatment.

The first few weeks require a period of adjustment: speaking and chewing with a denture are learnt gradually. Small adjustments are often needed to remove sore spots.

When the stability of a complete denture is a problem, particularly in the lower jaw, a few implants can be used to hold it in place. The dentist presents the different options, with their advantages and their limits, at the consultation.

This is a general answer. Only a consultation at the practice can tell what suits your situation.
