What is the difference between a veneer and a crown?

A veneer is a thin shell bonded to the visible surface of the tooth. A crown covers the whole tooth. A veneer preserves more of the tooth; a crown suits more damaged teeth.

Veneers and Hollywood Smile

A veneer is a thin piece, most often made of ceramic or composite, fixed to the front of the tooth. It changes the shade, shape, length or apparent alignment of a tooth while preserving most of its natural structure.

A crown covers the entire visible part of the tooth. It requires more extensive preparation, but it strengthens a tooth weakened by a large cavity, a fracture, extensive old fillings or root canal treatment.

In a complete smile project, known as a Hollywood Smile, the two are often combined: veneers on healthy teeth and crowns on those that need them. What matters is that the whole is harmonious, with the same shade and consistent shapes.

The choice is not made from a photo. It is based on an examination of each tooth, the condition of the gums, your bite and your expectations. The dentist explains what is indicated in your case, and why.

This is a general answer. Only a consultation at the practice can tell what suits your situation.
