Do the teeth need to be filed down for veneers?
Depending on the case, light preparation of the enamel is needed, and sometimes none at all. The aim is to preserve as much natural tooth as possible, following the project approved at the smile trial.
Veneers and Hollywood Smile
How much of the tooth needs preparing depends on the position of your teeth and the result you are looking for. If a tooth sits further back, it is sometimes possible to add material without removing any. If it sits forward or is very dark, slightly more preparation may be needed.
In most veneer projects, preparation remains superficial and is limited to the enamel. This is one of the major differences with a crown, which requires the tooth to be reduced on all sides.
A cautious approach is to guide the preparation using the approved smile trial. In this way, the dentist removes only what the project requires, and no more.
Bear in mind that a tooth prepared for a veneer will need one for good: the procedure cannot be reversed. This is one more reason to take time to think and to ask all your questions before you start.
This is a general answer. Only a consultation at the practice can tell what suits your situation.
